Well, my friends…they were in Athens last night at the Wild Rumpus Parade. If Max had been there, he would have seen his fantasy world come to life in blazing technicolor. It was…..crazy fun! It is yet another reason why I love this town. I must admit that it really did feel a little bit like Stars Hollow…on crack. This event has usurped some others to move its way onto my Top 5 list.
The streets of downtown at first were like a ghost town. There was an eerie kind of silence that felt ripe and heavy with anticipation. Most of the city, we thought, was camped out somewhere along the Georgia coast or the nearby Florida towns ready and waiting for the big Saturday showdown. However, we were wrong, another side of Athens emerged last night. They started amassing slowly, as if by time lapse photography. It bloomed into quite a spectacle to behold as the parade began.
begged enticed Steve to dress up against his stubborn protestations (and he was glad he did). He complained that we would probably be the only ones in costume……believe me …no worries there. The city was positively overflowing with costumed humanity…aliens, zombies, princesses, robots, Chewbacca’s, monsters, storm troopers, ninjas, turtles, blue men, stay puff marshmallows, clowns, insects, animals, celebrities, and one Indiana and Waldo. : ) It was as if we had stumbled into an alternate universe…a bizarro world. The creativity of response was the epitome of whimsy and it was unbelievably fun to just be a bystander.
Everyone needs large doses of whimsy in their life, no matter how old you are. It felt pretty wonderful to be costumed attendants to that surge of celebration and just feel like laughing with abandon from the sheer vision of our landscape. So just like my children did so many years ago the day after Halloween, we are planning our costume for next year! Can not wait!!! “Let the wild rumpus start…” Come join us! You’ll be glad you did.
