Many many years ago, we all started on the same launching pad. We shared our days, our hopes and our dreams with each other. We hid our vulnerabilities and our angst amidst the pressure of our peers to be cool and have it all figured out. And then one day, those years in that special place ended faster than we possibly imagined and we graduated. Life flung us out to go our separate ways and explore the world. Some… we would never see again after that breezy goodbye excitedly waved with diploma in hand. Others… we would see sporadically every decade or so at reunions. And then there are those that would stay with us in love and friendship throughout the years. All…. have marked us in some way.
Last night, we celebrated a couple that has come back to that starting point and united in marriage. We have traveled so far in space and time in the intervening years writing our own stories, but it was like coming home again. It was a renewal of that innocence that we shared back then and we all rejoiced in that feeling. We draped ourselves in it. Who doesn’t love a great high school romance story!! It felt hopeful and happy and it touched our hearts on a primal level. Thomas Wolfe said that you can’t go home again….but you can certainly get back to the neighborhood.
Congrats to Carolyn and Merrill!!! Welcome to the High School Sweetheart Club!! Steve and I highly recommend it. We raise our glasses in cheers: Being someone’s first love may be great, but being their last is beyond perfect!
